First Ten Amendments


The first ten amendments are also known as the Bill of Rights.  They are referred this way because they were all adopted and put into effect at the same time.

The 1st Amendment: Freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom to assemble, freedom to petition, and freedom of the press. 
The 2nd Amendment: Right to own guns.
The 3rd Amendment: The army cannot force homeowners to give them room and board.
The 4th Amendment: The government needs a valid warrant based on probable cause to search people and their homes.
The 5th Amendment: Individuals cannot be committed of a crime unless they are properly indicated of doing so. Double Jeopardy rights are discussed - you cannot be tried twice for the same crime. Individuals cannot testify against themselves. Due process guarantees are also discussed.
The 6th Amendment: Guarantees a speedy trial. The accused must be allowed a lawyer.
The 7th Amendment: Guarantees a jury trial in federal civil court cases.

The 8th Amendment: Punishments shall be fair and excessive fines shall not be set.
The 9th Amendment: Other rights not listed may exist.
The 10th Amendment: States that any power not granted to the federal government belongs to the states or to the people.
